Tourism Kamloops is seeking council’s support to allow for recreational sporting equipment rentals and food and beverage services in Riverside park this summer.
In the report headed to council on Tuesday, staff say allowing for equipment rentals and food services would continue to attract new residents, visitors and businesses while supporting local companies and giving locals something fun to do in the summer months.
“Other communities are seeking to entice entrepreneurs and businesses to their communities, specifically those that support outdoor activity and the greater enjoyment of our natural resources,” says the staff report.
“Water and waterways have always been a main attractor for recreation, and the opportunity to expand on what is already offered would be beneficial to our community, visitors, and businesses.”
In summer 2021, council authorized Tourism Kamloops to coordinate and manage various commercial activities in Riverside Park, including sport and recreation equipment rentals, games, and food and beverage services, out of a concession building.
If the pilot program is renewed this year, Tourism Kamloops would be the prime contractor while overseeing business on city property and would acquire all necessary insurance to cover the city, staff, third-party employees and the public.
In addition, if city council approved the request, staff say there is space within the new Riverside Park washroom/lifeguard building for Tourism Kamloops to run their operations from.
Council would also need to authorize a one-year exemption to the Parks and Public Lands bylaw to allow for the commercial activity.
This matter will be discussed further during the Tuesday meeting which begins at 1:30 pm.
