(UPDATE: Sept. 6 @ 3:35 pm) - The playground at Mission Creek Regional Park will no longer be shutting down on Monday, Sept. 9.
A day after the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) announced the playground would be replaced over the next month, a follow-up statement says those plans have been postponed.
In a written statement, the RDCO said it had "heard the feedback" and is listening.
"The project start has been delayed until spring 2025 to allow for further evaluation of accessibility standards, scheduling and material availability," the statement said. "This extra time will ensure that we can address the community’s concerns."
The Regional District added that it's committed to providing "safe and enjoyable" recreational spaces and looks forward to delivering an upgraded playground that will serve the community for many years.
(Original story: Sept. 5 @ noon) - Parents who take their kids to play at Mission Creek Regional Park will have to find an alternative solution over the next month.
Starting Monday, work will begin to replace the main playground at the central Kelowna park.
As a result, the playground and rope climbing area will be closed to the public from Sept. 9 until Oct. 4.
“The natural adventure playground located east of the Leckie Road entrance will remain open during this time,” notes the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) in a release.
A portion of the parking lot directly beside the playground area will also be closed to allow room for material staging and heavy equipment.
During construction, visitors should expect to hear and see heavy equipment in operation at the site such as skid steers, mini excavators and tandem trucks,” adds the RDCO.
“Signage and barricades will be in place during the closure. Visitors are asked to obey construction signage and worker direction.”
The new play structure set to be installed over the next month is a result of resident feedback provided to the RDCO in 2023.
