Steady decline in donations for Happy Feet 911 leads to bare shelves

A decline in donations for the Happy Feet 911 initiative has led to some bare shelves.

The Nanaimo RCMP runs the donation program, giving out shoes to those in need.

“Our shelves are literally bare with no shoes or runners to hand out to those who need them the most,” said Cst. Josh Waltman, Nanaimo RCMP Mental Health Liaison Officer, who is calling upon the citizens of Nanaimo to donate gently used runners.

Project Happy Feet 911 is well into its second year of operation, however, in recent months’ organizers have seen a steady decline in donations.

Cst. Waltman says they desperately need men’s sizes 9 through 11.

To donate, simply come by the Nanaimo RCMP detachment, located at 303 Fitzwilliam St, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and drop off your donation in the blue bin, located in the left corner of the foyer.

“Let’s fill those bins and help those who really need our help,” added the department.

This Friday, May 26, 2023, from 9 am to 11 am, organizers will be out front of the Nanaimo detachment handing out their limited supply of shoes.
