The BC Provincial Government has announced the allocation of $9 million in funding for the installation of hydroelectric power infrastructure at the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority’s port at Ogden Point.
The infrastructure will allow docked ships to run on electrical power, rather than through the burning of fossil fuels, as they normally would when put to sea.
With over 300 cruise ships carrying more than 800,000 passengers expected to dock in the city this summer, the project’s goal is to limit the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution produced by ships visiting Victoria:
"People want solutions to environmental concerns while also growing our economy," said BC’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming in a press release. “Adding shore power will allow us to turn off large cruise ship engines by connecting vessels to clean electricity at Ogden Point. This will lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce air pollution and create well-paying jobs that support sustainable tourism.”
