Victoria’s only exclusively male trauma facility, the Men’s Therapy Centre, is on the verge of closing after multiple attempts to secure government funding proved unsuccessful.
The Centre’s services remain in high demand, providing support for over 300 men suffering from physical and emotional trauma on the South Island, with an additional 60+ currently on the waiting list, according to the organization.
The organization fears their closure will leave their clients with nowhere else to turn for trauma therapy and support:
“We not only provide an essential service, but offer our clients a pathway to recovery from intergenerational trauma and the cycle of addiction, crime, incarceration and re-offence,” said Bruce Monkhouse, Board Chair of the Men’s Therapy Centre. “Without effective trauma treatment, the research is very clear, individuals return to addictions that lead to criminal and antisocial behavior.”
The Centre’s Board of Directors recently took measures to cut its budget and employee wages, signaling their imminent closure in the weeks and months to come.
