1969-12-31 19:30:00 1969-12-31 16:00:00 America/Vancouver Wreckonciliation Opera Kelowna presents their studio production, Wreckonciliation, a groundbreaking musical response to the decade following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report on Canada’s Indian Residential Schools. Mezzo soprano Marion Newman, of Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations, and Métis soprano Melody Courage, co-host a cheeky talk show that delves into the challenges and opportunities created by a decade of efforts at reconciliation. With their guests, they navigate the serious and comical sides, breaking into song to express what words cannot. Featuring a diverse musical lineup the show explores elemental themes of water, fire, air, and earth. The evening begins with an opportunity to view UBC Okanagan Gallery’s art installations throughout the venue, followed by a pre-show talk by Artistic Director Rosemary Thomson. The main event welcomes everyone to witness a fusion of Indigenous and European operatic traditions, performed by the co-hosts, string quartet, and Opera Kelowna Artistic Director, Rosemary Thomson. After the show, join a discussion and celebration with the artists. Wreckonciliation invites you to embrace the joy and work of building a better future together. It’s a talk show. It’s a concert. It’s completely irreverent…in a good way. Performed by: Marion Newman & Melody Courage Directed by: Yvette Nolan Musical Direction by: Rosemary Thomson Accompanied by string quartet and piano *pay-what-you-wish tickets available.
