Henna products that can 'produce chemical burns' recalled by Health Canada

Tens of thousands of henna products have been recalled after they were found to pose a risk of causing chemical burns.

Health Canada urged consumers to immediately stop using the following products: Shakeel Bhai Mehndi Waley Almas Henna Cones, Original Special Zeenat Henna Cones and Special Bridal Henna Cones.

More than 47,000 units of the products, which are made in Pakistan, were sold in Canada between August 2019 and March 2024.

Health Canada said the cosmetics contain phenol, which is a prohibited ingredient.

“Phenolic compounds are known skin sensitizers and can produce chemical burns (corrosive action) to the skin,” the agency explained in a public notice.

Three reports of incidents involving the Special Bridal Henna Cones product have been received by Health Canada as of March 20, according to the notice.

Anyone in possession of the products is urged to immediately stop using them and to dispose of them with regular household garbage.
