VIDEO: Kelowna's newest waterfront park nears completion

Kelowna's newest waterfront park is nearing completion, but residents will still have to wait a month and a half to take advantage of it.

"It's nice to be near the finish line," said project manager Todd DeGruchy.

The lakefront community-level park at the foot of Cedar Avenue (KLO Road) features an urban beach, paddle sport launch area, pedestrian promenade, pathways, and more.

Construction began late in 2020 and while it looks inviting, the fences will remain up for a while yet.

"There's a few supply chain issues and a few projects still needing to be completed," said DeGruchy.

"There are some lights that still need to be delivered and we have an accessible launch for kayaks and canoes as well, so that's still to be completed."

The launch is important because the park is designed to work well for paddlers.

"So there will be access with Kelowna Paddle Centre adjacent to the park as well," explained DeGruchy.

One feature that is sure to catch your eye is the presence of some unique concrete lounging chairs.

"A local manufacturer has formed these up and they're a nice added feature to the park," he explained.

And when the hot weather is upon us, people can take advantage of the coolest feature of all.

The park will have mist which literally rises up from the ground.

"It's basically a high-pressure vaporizer," said Degruchy, "so it's a fog station with lights as well. So it's motion activated."

Right now, it's simply being referred to as the city's newest waterfront park.

That mystery will likely be resolved when the park officially opens.

The tentative date for that is June 24.
