Shuswap's wildfire situation remains 'stable' but proactive planning continues

The fire situation in the Shuswap remains stable thanks to cooler weather, says the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District (CSRD).

In a community update, the Shuswap Emergency Program (SEP) says officials continue to be in communication with BC Wildfire Service, especially for the Mara Mountain and Newsome Creek wildfires.

The CSRD says those two fires are the closest to populated areas.

According to the update, SEP staff were able to take a helicopter flight on Wednesday afternoon to check out those two fires.

“Significant” growth was observed on the Newsome Creek wildfire, which is burning south of Shuswap Lake between Chase and Sorrento.

“We continue to expect visible smoke as temperatures and wind increase,” the CSRD says.

However, the last update provided on July 24 shows the lightning-caused wildfire was estimated at one hectare.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Shuswap region, the Mara Mountain wildfire is showing rank two and rank three fire behaviour.

“BCWS continues to indicate there is no threat to surrounding communities,” the CSRD says.

“Proactive planning for structure protection continues with the assistance of the Sicamous and Swansea Point Fire Departments.”

The Mara Mountain wildfire remains esteemed at 260 hectares.

Additionally, the Shuswap Emergency Program is helping the Golden and Area Emergency Program with the response to a wildfire affecting Parson and Nicholson in Electoral Area A (Rural Golden).
